A bus-sized asteroid is expected to make its closest approach to Earth today. It is also known as the Asteroid 2023 JL1. It will pass by Earth at a distance of 2,490,000 kilometers. This is about 10 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon. The asteroid is traveling at a speed of 26,316 kilometers per hour. It is not considered to be a threat to Earth.
The asteroid was first discovered in January 2023 by the Catalina Sky Survey. It is classified as a Near-Earth Object (NEO), which means that it comes within 50 million kilometers of Earth’s orbit. 2023 JL1 is the largest NEO to pass by Earth this year.
Scientists are monitoring the asteroid closely to make sure that it does not pose a threat to Earth. However, they are confident that it will safely pass by the planet.
